Ensuring Access to Essential Medicines through MEDS
At the core of MEDS’ mission is the strengthening of national medicine distribution systems to ensure that all Kenyans have access to essential medicines. By establishing a robust pull system, MEDS plays a pivotal role in transforming the way health facilities across the country procure medicines. This approach is designed to ensure that medicines are available where and when they are needed, while also building the financial resilience of health facilities to meet their ongoing needs.
A Sustainable and Reliable Pull System
MEDS implements a pull system that empowers health facilities with a line of credit, allowing them to purchase high-quality, low-cost medicines based on their patient intake. This dynamic approach not only streamlines procurement but also ensures that the right medicines are available in the right quantities. The sales of medicines replenish the credit line, creating a self-sustaining cycle where the facility can continuously replenish their stock. This model provides a direct solution to the frequent challenge of stockouts, ensuring that essential medicines are always available for those in need.
A Catalog Aligned with Global Standards
MEDS ensures that its catalog of medicines aligns with global standards, referencing the World Health Organization (WHO) Essential Medicines List to guide the selection of medicines. This means that health facilities have access to the most relevant, cost-effective treatments that are proven to have the greatest impact on health outcomes. The catalog is further complemented by the Kenyan Government’s healthcare priorities and the Pharmaceuticals and Poisons Board (PPB) regulations, ensuring that all medicines meet national standards for safety, efficacy, and quality.
Supporting National Health Priorities
In partnership with the Kenyan government, MEDS helps to address public health priorities by ensuring that essential medicines are accessible to all citizens, including in rural and underserved areas. By working within the framework established by the PPB, MEDS guarantees that all medicines distributed are compliant with the regulatory requirements of the country. This strategic approach to medicine distribution not only strengthens the healthcare system but also directly contributes to improving the overall health and well-being of the Kenyan population.
